Male factor infertility services

The HSE is currently planning a big expansion of infertility services but to date it has all been based on gynaecology services. The ISU has made a very strong representations to the HSE, laying out the argument for urologists to be involved in public fertility services and that surgical sperm retrieval procedures should be available from trained urologists in the public system. Our thanks to Aisling Looney, John Sullivan, and Eamonn Rogers and others who have worked so hard to get our viewpoint over to the HSE. It will without doubt be a much better service for all infertile couples once the male infertility factor care is sorted out appropriately.

PRAISE-U

This study of prostate cancer screening was launched earlier this year to much publicity and interest. It is an EU funded prostate cancer screening study being performed in several European countries and Ireland was selected as one of those. Our role in this study involves a novel fingerprick blood test for PSA done at home. It aims to recruit 8000 patients in Dublin and Waterford. Congratulations to David Galvin and colleagues for overcoming a number of difficult hurdles to get this up and going.
